A crowd of thousands stormed a jail in India Thursday evening, dragged out a suspected rapist and beat him to death in the street, CNN reports.
The rampage took place in the state of Nagaland located in far northeastern India. Police have arrested 43 people on a host of charges, including arson, rioting, attempted murder and murder, Nagaland Police Chief L.L. Doungal said.
One might wonder whether the angry mob acted out of genuine outrage for violence against women? Unlikely.
Initial reports indicate that the rape victim is an ethnic Naga. The deceased rape suspect, a 35-year-old man, reportedly was a Muslim migrant from Bangladesh.
Ethnic tensions are growing between native Nagas and Bangladeshi migrants in the region.
