UPDATE: The European Union turned down Hungary’s request.
ORIGINAL: The Hungarian government is asking the European Union to cover 400 million euros of the approximately 800 million euros it spent on erecting fences along Hungary’s borders with Serbia and Croatia, according to numerous media reports. Budapest argues its fencing helps protect the rest of the EU from undesirable migrants.
Hungary erected the fences as hundreds of thousands of migrants were pouring into Central Europe in 2015. Later, the Hungarian government built migrant housing, or detention centers (depending on who you ask), at transit zones attached to the border fence.
